A black/red rooster with golden duckwing hens.
My golden duckwing rooster "Galeno" with some of his ladies.
"Pigpen" my blue-buff pullet.
A tailed Araucana cockerel with nice, well-balanced tufts, one willow leg, and one yellow leg.
A closer view of the same trio at the top of the page.
Golden duckwing hens.
The tips of her right tuft got nipped off during mating right before the fair. I was so mad! Normally they are perfectly symmetrical.
Wild-type BBR hen
Pigpen again. I love this bird!
"Galeno" my bilateral-tufted, rumpless rooster.
Araucanas. A young Galeno is in the background, and his father "Skunk" is in the foreground.
"Wilbur" and "Anabelle." Anabelle is also bilateral-tufted, but her tufts are so small they can only be seen upon close examination.
Tufted/tailed brown-red pullet.
Blue-buff pullet.
Beautiful tufts on a white pullet from Steve Waters.
"Charlie" a rumpless BBR-ish pullet.
Gorgeous bilateral-tufted, rumpless black pullet from Steve Waters.
Some of the rumpless girls.
"Anabelle", a BBR pullet. She is technically bilateral-tufted, but her tufts are very small. However, since she carries the tufted gene just the same as any other tufted bird, she could easily produce offspring with nice big tufts.
Galeno at 5 months of age.
Girls again. Not as flashy as the boys, but still very pretty!
This is Skunk, my first Golden Duckwing Araucana rooster. He is no longer alive, but his son Galeno is currently my best breeding bird.
Blue-buff pullet.
This is Quetzal, my tufted/tailed Brown-Red hen. She has proper willow legs, nice tufts, and yellow skin. She is the mother to many of my Duckwings and BBR's.
My tufted duckwing pullet, Princess Leia. It was raining and her tufts were all bedraggled!
Quetzal again.
This is Moen, my rumpless/clean-headed BBR rooster.
Notice the comb and wattles on this bird. For an Araucana, they are a little too big. Araucanas, even the roosters, should have very small or absent wattles and pea combs that are neat and tight to the head. Large, floppy combs and wattles imply recent crossbreeding.
Rumpless/clean-headed Duckwing hen. Notice how the center or "shaft" of each feather is white or light-colored. This is called "shafting" and is extremely common on BBR and Duckwing Araucana hens. If possible, a breeder should work to minimalize and eventually eliminate this trait.
Eggs from my Araucana pullets.
A Duckwing pair.
A BBR pair. The hen is a little too dark and the rooster a little too light; they are well-matched.
Skunk & Quetzal
Nice thick even tufts on this Duckwing cockerel.
Duckwing culls. Notice that the hackles & saddles are mostly black when they should be golden, and the legs are slate (gray) instead of willow (green). The first bird has dark red in the shoulder and wing-tips where he should be golden, and the 2nd bird has a weak wing-bar and mottling on the chest. These are all common problems in standard-sized duckwings.
Pigpen the blue-buff pullet again. Her mother is the white hen in the background. Her father is "Galeno" the golden duckwing pictured at the top of the page.
